A single wall heat pump with a standard back-to-back installation is the most affordable way to get a heat pump. At the time of writing, our launch specials start from $1,999 including GST, supplied and installed. The final price depends on the size of the unit, where it goes and anything beyond a standard install, which we price before work starts.

Heat pump prices online can be confusing. Some quotes are for the unit only, some include a basic install, and some list extras later. Here's how heat pump installation pricing works in New Zealand, so you can compare like with like.
What decides the price of a heat pump installation
- The size of the unit. A 2.5 kW bedroom unit costs less than a 7 kW unit for an open-plan living area. Getting the right size heat pump matters more than getting the cheapest.
- The model and brand. Entry models do the job well in many rooms; premium models add features such as quieter running, better cold-weather output or air purification.
- Where the units go. A back-to-back install is the simplest. Longer pipe runs, a second storey or a hard-to-reach outdoor position add time and materials.
- The type of system. A ducted or multi-room system heats more of the home and is a bigger job than a single wall unit.
What a standard back-to-back installation includes
In a back-to-back install the outdoor unit sits directly behind the indoor unit, on the other side of the wall. The pipe run stays short and the job stays tidy. Our standard installation covers:
- Indoor and outdoor units installed
- Up to 4 metres of pipework and cabling
- Up to 3 metres of exterior trunking
- Condensate drainage
- Electrical connection from the nearest suitable power point
- Pressure and leak testing, and vacuuming of the system
- Commissioning and full system testing

What can add to the cost
Every home is different. Things that go beyond a standard install include extra pipework or wiring, condensate pumps, wall brackets or roof mounting, scaffolding, drilling through concrete and switchboard upgrades. We price these and agree them with you before any work starts, so there are no surprises on the invoice.
How to compare heat pump quotes
- Check the heating capacity, not just the model name, which usually refers to cooling.
- Ask exactly what the installation includes: metres of pipe, trunking, drainage and electrical work.
- Check who does the electrical connection. It should be a registered electrician.
- Compare warranties on both the unit and the installation. We give you a 5-year workmanship warranty along with the 5-year manufacturer warranty.
- Make sure the quote is fixed and written, not an estimate that grows on the day.
Is a cheap installation worth it?
The installation decides how well a heat pump performs and how long it lasts. Poorly vacuumed or badly insulated pipework, bad drainage and the wrong position lead to leaks, breakdowns and higher power bills. A careful install costs a little more time on the day and saves money over the life of the unit.
