A heat pump that stops working always seems to do it on the coldest night of the year. Some problems you can fix yourself in a few minutes. Others need a technician. Here's how to tell the difference.

Quick checks you can do yourself

  • Remote and mode: make sure it’s set to HEAT, not AUTO, DRY or FAN, and the set temperature is above the room temperature. Replace the remote’s batteries.
  • Timers: an old on/off timer, or a schedule in the phone app, can switch the unit off without you noticing.
  • Power: check the isolating switch next to the outdoor unit and your switchboard.
  • Filters: clogged filters cut the airflow and the heat. See how to clean the filters yourself.
  • Outdoor unit: clear away leaves, plants, snow covers or anything stacked against it.

Blowing cold air on a frosty morning

On cold mornings the outdoor unit builds up frost, and the heat pump pauses heating for a few minutes to melt it. The indoor fan stops or blows cool air, you may see steam from the outdoor unit, and then it starts heating again. That’s normal. If it blows cold air for a long time, or never gets warm, book a repair. See also the best settings for winter.

Water leaking from the indoor unit

A heat pump takes water out of the air, and that water drains away through a small pipe. If the drain is blocked, the pipe has come loose or the filters are badly clogged, water can drip from the indoor unit. Turn it off and book a repair, because water near electrics is not something to leave.

Flashing lights and error codes

Most heat pumps show a fault as flashing lights on the indoor unit or a code on the remote. The code points to the fault, such as a sensor, the fan, the drainage or the refrigerant system. The codes are different for every brand, so note the code, or take a photo or video of the flashing lights, and tell us when you book. It helps us bring the right parts.

Strange noises or smells

A musty smell usually means the filters and coil need cleaning. Rattling, grinding or loud buzzing, or a burning smell, needs a technician. Switch the unit off if you smell burning.

What happens when we repair it

We find the fault, explain what’s wrong and quote the repair before any work starts. If the unit is old and the repair costs more than it’s worth, we’ll tell you, and give you a price to replace it so you can compare.

Brands we repair

Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Panasonic, Fujitsu, Haier, AHI Carrier and other major brands, across Hamilton and the Waikato, whether we installed it or not.
